5 Surprising Facts About Your Hands

Your hands work hard every single day. From tying shoelaces to typing messages and preparing meals, they rarely get a break. However, there is far more to your hands than most people realise.

As upper limb experts, we know how complex and remarkable the hand and upper limb truly are. Here are five surprising facts about your hands and why caring for them matters.

1. Your Hands Have Over 30 Muscles

Each hand contains more than 30 muscles that allow for precise, coordinated movement. Interestingly, many of the muscles that move your fingers actually start in your forearm.

According to Innerbody, these muscles provide the hands with flexibility, precise control, and gripping strength needed for everything from writing and typing to gripping a ball in sport. The hand muscles are grouped into three key regions : the thenar (thumb side), hypothenar (little finger side), and intermediate (middle of the palm) each playing a distinct role in movement and grip.

2. Your Fingertips Are Packed with Nerve Endings

The fingertips contain some of the densest nerve endings in the body. This allows you to:

  • Feel subtle texture differences
  • Detect temperature changes quickly
  • Perform delicate tasks with precision
  • React instantly to potential danger

While this sensitivity is a strength, it also means injuries to the fingers can be particularly painful and disruptive.

3. Grip Strength Is Linked to Overall Health

Grip strength is more than just a measure of hand function. Research shows that it is often linked to overall health and functional independence as we age.

A recent BBC Future article explores how grip strength is increasingly recognised as a marker of longevity and overall wellbeing, with studies linking stronger grip strength to lower risk of chronic disease and even improved chances of living to 100.

Reduced grip strength can occur due to:

  • Hand or wrist fractures
  • Tendon injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Nerve compression
  • Prolonged immobilisation

Targeted rehabilitation and strengthening exercises can significantly improve function and confidence in daily activities.

4. Swelling Can Significantly Restrict Tendon Glide

After injury or surgery, swelling may seem like a minor issue. Even small amounts of swelling in the hand can seriously affect tendon glides.

Tendons rely on smooth movement within tight spaces. Swelling increases pressure and friction, making movement stiff and painful.

A clear example is de Quervain tenosynovitis, a condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. The Mayo Clinic explains how thickening and swelling around these tendons can restrict their ability to glide smoothly, causing pain and difficulty with grasping or pinching movements.

Managing swelling early helps prevent stiffness and long-term restriction.

5. Early Movement Often Improves Outcomes

Many people assume complete rest is best after a hand injury. In many cases, controlled early movement actually improves recovery.

Guided movement can:

  • Promote healthy tendon healing
  • Reduce joint stiffness
  • Minimise scar tissue restriction
  • Improve circulation

Of course, every injury is different. That is why expert assessment is essential. The specialist team at Auckland Hand Rehab has decades of experience guiding patients through safe, early movement so you can recover with confidence, knowing every step is backed by specialist expertise.
